Willy Wilkinson was a co-editor of Phoenix Rising alongside Kitty Tsui in 1988. Wilkinson, MPH, is the author of ‘Born on the Edge of Race and Gender: A Voice for Cultural Competency.’ He is an award-winning transgender writer, public health consultant, trainer, speaker, and researcher.
In this interview, Wilkinson discusses the landscape of the 80s lesbians of color movement, in what way gender was discussed in these communities, how writing helped him articulate his politics, identity and passions, and how he became involved in public health work, trainings and policy for marginalized communities.
